Your one stop source for scleral contact lens information, applications and new technologies.
In the last five years a new corneal prosthetic has revolutionized the non-surgical treatment of corneal disorders. Scleral contacts have changed the therapeutic landscape for many visual and medical conditions of the eye in recent years. This website is dedicated to providing education to patients and other healthcare providers as to the myriad advantages these unique medical devices can offer patients and the lifechanging visual and comfort changes that are possible with their proper utiization. We hope you learn more and they can provide relief for your medical eye condition.

The Two Most Common Applications for These Devices at Present are Keratoconus and Severe Dry Eye/Ocular Surface Disease

Patients with keratoconus and other irregular corneal conditions are perfect candidates for these unique lenses that provide clear, comfortable vision all the while not touching the cornea at all!

If you look at the schematic below, you will notice that the scleral contact lens does not touch the cornea at all, only touching and gently resting on the sclera, or white of the eye. This creates a health promoting moisture chamber that lubricates and protects the eye from dessication (drying out) and lid sheer (the lid rubbing on the dry surface, irritating it) all the while providing super crisp, clear vision thanks to the rigid lens optics that the scleral contact lens provides. This is especially important in corneal ectatic (thinning) disorders like keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration (PMD) and keratoconjunctivits sicca (severe dry eye disease) as well as other corneal situations that result in an irregular surface that makes the vision poor despite wearing glasses or even soft contact lenses.
